Did You Know? | Glendale, AZ Fun Facts-image

The city of Glendale, AZ has a rich history stretching back to 1892. Since then, Glendale has grown from a small farming town to the city that we know it as today. Today, the city is developing at a faster rate attracting investors and many new people from around the country. Let’s take a look at the roots of this beautiful city we call home. A New Beginning Just like many civilizations around the world, Glendale was born primarily for its proximity to water, the Salt River Valley. Easy access to the Agua Fria River meant that settlers had plenty of fertile soil for crops especially when considering that surrounding areas were barren desert lands. On February 27, 1882, Glendale was officially incorporated. By 1930 the Town of Glendale turned to the City of Glendale driven by a booming economy and a larger population.  Thunderbird Field No. 1 In 1940, the city of Glendale aided the efforts of the United States in WW2 by clearing desert land to construct Thunderbird Field No. 1, a military airfield used to train Allied pilots. After the end of the war, the air base was converted to the Thunderbird School of Global Management which ran its operations all the way up to 2018 when it was transformed into the Arizona Christian University. It is widely discussed that Thunderbird Field inspired Gerry Anderson to create the 1960s hit TV series, Thunderbirds. Other significant events that Glendale has contributed to American culture include the city’s hosting of three Super Bowls in the past three decades State Farm Stadium On August 1st, 2006, the multi-purpose Cardinal’s Stadium came to fruition. It was regarded as one of the most high-tech sports facilities in the globe due to its field’s ability to roll in and out as well as its retractable roof. These features made this stadium a perfect candidate for high profile events including the Super Bowl, Wrestlemania, International Soccer matchups, and sold out concerts such as the Rolling Stones and Guns N Roses. In 2008, the stadium hosted its first Super Bowl with the New York Giants defeating the New England Patriots. The event drew over 71,000 fans. The Stadium hosted its second Super Bowl in 2015 and is set to host its third Super Bowl in 2023.  From a quaint farm town to the city we know today, Glendale, AZ has grown quite significantly since the second half of the 19th century. As the city continues to expand, more and more people are making the move to Glendale and its surrounding areas including Phoenix. If you’re looking for affordable modern apartments with great amenities and proximity to all things Glendale, make sure to check out Acero at the Stadium apartments.
